April 1, 2006

Well understandably no one's written anything here for a while, but I just have to say, global warming or not, it was a loooong damn winter without Luther's blues at the Rynborn.

However one particularly meaningful memory (among many) kept recurring, and will stay with me forever. (Where else but the Rynborn did we have the opportunity to talk to an approachable legend like Luther, as if we had back-stage passes?)

In June, 2005, I was fortunate enough to attend what turned out to be Luther's last Rynborn appearance. He was fabulous as always, better than ever. During the second half of his show, as I watched him smile back to the audience in that special way of his, I thought to myself "You know...he's having every bit as much fun as we are...maybe more."Following the last of his toga-tied encores, Luther was sitting alone on the edge of the stage, sipping ice water as is his post-show ritual. I just couldn't help but go up to him and blurt out, "You really love it, don't you Luther." Luther looked back at me, grinning that big grin of his, and proclaimed, "Every note!". Wow. And you knew he meant it. I floated home, high on Luther's shared enthusiasm.

There are so many great, down-to-earth people in the blues world, performers and fans alike. The Rynborn brought us all closer than anyplace ever has. Here's giving thanks again to Doug and everyone connected to the Rynborn for a lifetime of great memories."

Musicians looking for a time probably should swing by the former location (now Back Ali's Pub) of the Rynborn in Antrim, NH on a Thursday night. You'll be pleasantly surprised to find an open jam on the old Rynborn stage with a lot of the old faces and some new ones too.

Comments: What an incrdible chapter in my life! The people that I have met, the music that I have been so fortunate to have listened to weekend after weekend and the memories of Rynborn are impossible to forget. Whenever I drive by the place I slow down a little and let it all sink in.
Its amazing that a place like the Rynborn even exsisted. I can still smell the place, hear the talent on stage and feel at home when I think about Rynborn. What it brought to a place like Keene can never be measured. I have never met any people like the Aborn family. Each one of them is so unique and they have a wonderful way of making you feel special without even trying.
To all the staff and regulars thank you all so much for always making me feel at home here. I will miss each of you so much.
As I leave Keene this December, my experiences in NH are far richer because this place has been a part of my life.
Much success, love, laughter and happiness always.

Comments: Doug,
I am very sorry to hear that the Rynborn is closed. Evidently, I live in a vacuum (or my head is a vacuum!) because I either didn't hear that you had closed or forgot that someone told me about it. I am sure that you can do it again somewhere else, if you are so inclined. In my opinion you have created so much good will over the years that people will follow where you lead- to great food, great blues, etc. Thanks for the great times both when I gigged at the club and on those two or three occasions when I was just there to listen.

Comments: Hi, In the mid 1990s, I had the pleasure of meeting Luther when he performed at „The White Horse‰ restaurant in Milford, New Hampshire. I later heard through a neighbor of his (Steve Bell) in Antrim, that he was very ill∑. I lost contact with Steve and wondered if there was any way I might contact Luther? (Mail? E-mail? Through the folks at the Rynborn?) I would really appreciate any information. He was very kind to me during a difficult time in my life and I‚d like to contact him. Thank you, Christine Graham

Comments: Dear Doug... we just finished a four week tour of New England and found out that the beautiful Rynborn had closed. I cannot tell you how incredibly saddened we feel because a) it was a truly great room with all kinds of still untapped potential and b) we were so looking forward to a return date. We stay with friends in Royalston, MA (about a half hour south of Keene) and thought how cool it would be to gig, pack up, and go back to our second home. Well my friend, c'est la vie. We wish you well with whatever direction you decide to go.
Warmest regards, Michael & Louise Pickett www.michaelpickett.com

Comments: Hey there, Doug! Sorry to hear the club is no more. I was a big fan of the Antrim club. Way back when, my wife and I used to visit your club when we drove up from Jersey to visit her parents who live in Antrim. Saw some great shows: Luther, Bobby Radcliffe and more than a few others. Well, the marriage didn't last, but I will always have fond memories of rockin' and bluesin' out at your club. May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine soft upon your fields, and till we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand. -- Bill from "Joisey"

Comments: Having heard Luther "Guitar Jr" Johnson years ago, I followed him around the New York Metro area whenever he was around; The Turning Point (my local club), The Towne Crier, and The B.B. King Club, to name a few. It wasn't until I did some research that I found out his "home" was at The Rynborn, and although I never visited your club, I felt I had been there just by visiting your site frequently; I kept "tabs" on Luther's condition, and find out who's doing what. I do regret not visiting your club, since I am frequently in the Southern VT (Wilmington) area. Always said I would, but just didn't. Rick Danko used to play The Turning Point several times a year, but it always seemed to be middle of the week, and I'd think about the fact that I have to get up at 5:00am.....never got to see Rick. Now, here I am checking your site to see if Luther's in the schedule, since I haven't seen him since he did a free show in Wilmington VT 2004. I figured it would be an opportunity!
to get to your club. Well, sorry to hear you shut your doors. I only hope that some time off will perhaps find you another place to call home, and an opportunity for me, to finally get to The Rynborn. Enjoy your time off while you can.

All the regulars moved along

Some people might call them drunks
But I call them my friends

And nowhere to hear those songs.

Thanks for all the great times. I met and became friends with many people at the Rynborn, musicians and fans alike... all who were there because you offered New England a real blues club. Thank you for that! It was also a pleasure to work for you... you always treated us musicians great... even when we played too loud ;-)

I wish you success and happiness in your next adventure.

Comments: I always had a love/hate relationship with the Rynborn. Loved everything about it - hated the fact that I couldn't get there often enough. In hindsight, every weekend of the club's existence would not have been often enough.

It was home. Never had to check the schedule - I knew I could walk in anytime and be happy - be at peace. I'd walk in the door and feel ALIVE - felt like you opened the joint just for me. There are damn few places with that kind of vibe - I feel privileged to have experienced it.

DOUG: I wandered in one afternoon many years ago to buy tickets to a show - I was the only one in the joint - I sat at the bar and we talked. It was the first time I had met you - it's a fond memory for me. Celebrated many good moments at the Rynborn - especially my birthday, which is January 1. I thank you heartily for great memories that I can call up at will whenever I feel the spirit being sucked out of me. And I wish you the absolute best of luck. I truly hope you find happiness and peace in whatever you do, because that's what you gave me time and time again.

Comments: Thank you all so much for your undying love and support. I watched this place form nearly 20 years ago in the minds, hearts, and souls of my father and his friend Mark Ryan, and respectively found myself growing up within it's walls. I am grateful to my dad for always making time for me and my plethora of emotions over the many years. No matter how much time and energy it required to keep this amazing Soul Center going, he was ALWAYS present for me whenever I needed it. People, this is the most amazing man I've ever known and he's always been my hero. It's obvious that so many of you realize what a hero he is too, and not only to the blues community, but in implementing culture into an otherwise very homogenized New Hampshire. THAT will never go away. And I know he means it when he says he couldn't have done it without all of your awesome support.
Dad, thank you for always feeding me (and even putting some vegetarian things on the menus!), for letting me into shows to boogie-on-down when I was even younger than Ephraim, and for always giving me a hug or an ear whenever the hell I needed it. I will continue to do any and everything I can to make your life more peaceful and more colourful as long as I live. I love you with every ounce of my soul which largely due to you is pretty deep. And DON'T try to say you're shallow - NOBODY will believe you.
Specific thanks to my dad's wife, Keryl, for staying strong through all of this. You are freakin incredible. My grandmother, Maureen, for all of her selfless contributions and hard work over the years. All of my awesome TRULY SMOKIN co-workers, I love you guys so much. And all of our regulars, old and new, who really knew what this place was all about. I'll see you all on higher ground.
With love and reverence, Rah

Comments: I grew up watching the TV show "Cheers" and dreamed of going to a place where "everyone knew your name and they were always glad you came." When I walked into the Rynborn about 6 years ago I knew I had found that place. No place else on earth could make you "feel so good about feeling so bad." I even drove from Rumney to Antrim to be there, because it was so like coming home to something a place to belong and be yourself.
I did make it to the Keene location a few times, but I have to say it just wasn't the same. It never felt like you belonged.
Just the same I have searched and searched for a place that would feel so right, like the Rynborn did. I still haven't found it!!!
Thank you for the great times, the great people, & the amazing memories.
So sad & so much missing a great place to share the BLUES!

Comments: Hey Doug and crew
Very sorry to hear about you closing. I‚d like to send a ray of happiness to say "Hey, you did it and you made history with a great Venue for the Blues." Poverty and hard times have kept me from making a name for myself, and can only apologize to Doug that I never visited the club. Do music and money mix? Mai Cramer said something about her ventures that she came to her own conclusion that if you love the music, don't look to make bucks from it.
I learned something about her that inspired me.
I am definitely not a spring chicken now, and I want to start to try to make some bucks, and have fun playing, too. How does a once a year Rynborn/Reunion Blues and Barbeque sound? I hope Dougie gets to read this and gets a chuckle.(Love to all the good folks, we are going to have fun with this, and Do Not Forget to Boogie!!!!!!)

Comments: Lots of great friends, great music, and great memories from the Rynborn, in both Antrim and Keene. Early on as a guitar player I was lucky enough to sneak in (16 or 17)to jam with Otis's band on Thursday nights.

Some of my favorite memories were my first 'real gig' (a Friday night with Otis and The Elevators), meeting "The Reverend", getting to talk to Luther and getting the occasional story about the old days out of him. Meeting Mississippi Skippy. The Jam after the benefit that was thrown for Luther, that included the Jimmy Johnson band (and maybe my favorite rhythym section ever), Matt Woodburn & Cheryl Arena, among others, seeing a real B3 for the first time (Ken Clarks), The Kan-Tu live recording, seeing Nicole Nelson, seeing Lonely Gus for the first time, Duke Robillard, Jim Weider, and Ken Clark doing their thing up close.. and of course taking part in lots of fun gigs with the Great Groove Theory. Last new years hiring Ken Clark and Matt Woburn was a particularly recent and great memory.

Lots of life-long friends were made there as well. After you take some time to enjoy life for a while, let us know what you are up to. I think many people will be very interested. Thanks for memories.

Comments: Hi Doug and Friends of the Rynborn,

I have been getting calls from friends all over New England (OK three calls, 2 from NH one from Connecticut) and even one from Toronto who are deeply saddened and forlorn with the prospects of a Rynborn free world. People keep asking if there may be an alternative spot, something not quite as high rent, that could be a new home for the Rynborn? In reading the responses from people all over the country (and these are just the ones who take the time to write)it seems as if there would be sufficient interest and support in filling the void left with the Rynborn closing with a new and reinvented Rynborn complete with Doug and his fabulous crew.

With all the friends and fans of the Rynborn, and with all the musicians who have come to Antrim and Keene over the years to share their love of the blues, I suspect there would be a great deal of support for a Rynborn rebirth.

I call upon those who have been the entertainers, and those who have been entertained, to think about pulling together an event that would allow the Rynborn to rise again to bring the blues, and the feeling that comes with being with people who love the blues, back to our area.

Drop a line to this forum and let Doug and his friends and supporters know what you think about a Rynborn rebirth and your level of support for an event that could help make this a possibility.

Best regards,
Tom

I haven't been able to make it out to Keene for a while and was shocked when I saw on your website that you have to call it quits. This is a black day for blues, especially in New England. The Rynborn was easily the best blues club in northern New England. We were always amazed that your Antrim place could be such a good blues club and have such good acts in the middle of nowhere (no offense, Antrim).

Good Luck in future endeavors -- we're gonna miss you!

Comments: Well damn it Doug, now you've gone and done it!
I never got to check out the joint after it moved to Keene. I tell everone what an awesome blues club we have in our back yard and it disappears.

I liked it better when you were trying to have a lottery to have someone win it. That was more fun.
Well since I quit the booze biz, I guess you shoud quit the restaurant biz. It was damn good having that stop in Antrim on the way home from Rindge. I hated that drive and if it weren't for the Rynborn pit stops I am not sure my sanity would have lasted. I'm pissed because I never got to jam there.

Well anyway a toast of a ) single malt scotch b) blackbush Irish Whiskey and c) Bombay Saphire to you. Maybe you should mix them all together and make a drink out of it. Call it the toast of the town or something--I'll have it printed on your new drink menus for you.

I'll never forget the night we blew out that $ 200 tab at Henry David's (or whatever it was called at the time). You should have seen my bosses eyes bug out when I turned that in on my expense account. I had to lie to him and tell him what a great customer you were ; ) fortunately he believed me and paid it. Robert Cray was awesome by the way. I still think about that show from time to time.

Well, this is a bit gabby but what the hell else would you expect from a salesman anyway ? There was only one other account that I enjoyed as much as the Rynborn, and ironically it was the Old Bench Cafe when Kevin Senft was there, same damn building. What's up with that ?

I don't know what you're going to do next but I'm sure you will be awesome at it. I don't think I met a better people person out of the hundred or so restaurant accounts I had to call on. "nuff said already right," ? take care,

Santa Clause

What a feeling of great loss we are experiencing right now. A warm heart felt thanks to Doug, his great family and wonderful crew, a truly dedicated bunch. They were always helpful, always true. I have so many wonderful memories that for me go back 12 years. Listening, studying and soaking up the vibes of so many great musicians. Jamming and slamming to some great grooves with old and new found friends. Gigging with my soul mates and partying into the night with many fellow travelers. What a trip. The Rynborn will live on in a very real way in the hearts and souls of its friends.

Comments: As all of you who truly know Doug, the decision to close did not come easy. The Rynborn has been his heart and soul for the past 18 years. Over the years I have witnessed him do everything in his power to make Rynborn, whether it be in the Antrim or Keene locale, be the best it could possibly be--for diners, for music lovers, for bands, for the bar crowd, and for the employees. I am obviously saddened by the outcome--Rynborn has been our center of attention, good and not so good, for the last 12 years and we will greatly miss it--there will definitely be a void in our lives. But, I am so thankful and pleased to hear of everyone's thoughts and comments as to what it has meant to them. Although I always knew Rynborn was a great, and I mean a *great* place, I think it has been so helpful, at this time, for Doug to hear from you all. I, also, want to thank the outstanding staff, our family, and friends who supported the Rynborn and continue to do so with your thoughts on the closing. It's been a whirlwind of emotions for us over the past two weeks, but as the dust settles, Doug (we) are thankful for all of you--each and every one. ~Keryl

Comments: This note is to especially express my huge gratitude to all the staff of Rynborn - each of you, including those of you who haven't worked there lately. (Doug, you already know how I feel!) What an extraordinary, wonderful bunch of people you are! (Doug, where did you find these people?!) You all created a place that was so warm, welcoming, safe, and always fun. Many times when I was there, I would marvel at the great vibe each of you, in your own unique ways, brought to Rynborn. Your love for eachother, the music, and for Rynborn was so evident, much more than "a job." Watching and speaking to those of you who were there on that last night with Bobby Radcliffe was so moving. You expressed your deep love and care for Rynborn, and for Doug and his family, and danced in your sadness and gratitude. It was a stunning sight I will always remember. Russell - what came through you on that harmonica was so powerful and true! Let it rip! Thank you so much to all of you ! for your kindness, your friendship, your humor, your dedication. We will all keep this spirit alive, because it is the spirit that makes being together the joy that it is. Rynborn has been a great gift for me, and you made it happen.
Peace and all the best to you....nadine

You put your heart and soul into the club and everyone from the performers, audience, staff and first-time folks who walked into either Antrim or Keene knew it was a special time and place.

I'm sure the worst part will be missing the people and the friendships you've made over the years. Hold on to those dearly as you embark on new adventures wherever they take you.

Dear Douglas!
we will skip the obvious sorrow and wish you a hearty congratulations and a heartfelt standing ovation on an institution that you (and your staff) built and gave as a true and unique gift to our home and to the area (Antrim, then Keene). The culture, diversity of music, and innovative cuisine came from the heart and the soul, and they all delivered in memorable style. We have sorely missed you in Antrim and know that your legend remains. Hold that head high and revel in the hundreds of tributes here echoing the same. It's all of our turns to make dinner and provide some classy and peaceful music for you and yours. Enjoy your well-deserved nap. We wish you peace and a smooth canoe in sunny, calm waters.
Always yours,

Real sorry to see the place close. I'll always have the great memories of the place in Antrim. All the times we were fortunate enough to see Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson, the after hours concert that Pinetop Perkins gave us when he was only 74 years old. Playing away on that old upright he brought in. The Reverend playing his great boogie piano in the "iron lung". All the great times playing at the open mikes and with Otis and the Elevators, too many great memories to list. I wish you well in all your future endeavors. Steve Clarke

Thanks for the memories - the spirit of the Rynborn lives in everyone who ever played for you, or ever felt the magic of the moment at the Rynborn. It's the same feeling that would make people order another round, and stay far too late, and listen, and shout, and hoot and holler, let tomorrow be damned, 'cause for once in their life they'd realize that there can be no better place on Earth to be than right where they are, right now.

Allow yourself to feel the gratitude of the thousands of people whose lives you've so deeply touched.

There's always another windmill.

Comments: Thanks for doing your bit to keep the Blues alive and well in NH for almost 2 decades, Doug. I'm sad to hear about the Rynborn's demise. I have to admit, I only attended 2 gigs there, but the happy memories of those times will last with me for a long time. Made it up for the 10th annual pig roast, too. What a great day that was! I'd have made the trek to Keene more if it wasn't such a long drive back to Worcester after closing time. Wish I had, now. :(

My nephew lives in Keene, and tells me he's stopped in at the Rynborn for a couple beers after work on a number of occasions. I can't speak for him, but I'm sure he'll be sorry to hear of your fine club's closing.

You've given joy to a lot of people, and turned many of them on to the music we love. Have a happy life, Doug. You deserve it if anyone does. God bless you and yours.

All in all the Rynborn is a great place to hang and unlike other bars, it never gets old.

Comments: My family and I found your place last night for the first time. We were awed! The food was great and the staff friendly. Albert Cummings was astonishing (he truly was the "master of the Stratacaster"). He also took the time to make my daughter, Lisa, have what she called the "best night of my life.' She was the girl in a wheelchair that Albert let "play" his guitar. All in all an impressive evening. As blues fans, we will be back often It is only a little over an hour trip.

One suggested performer for you... Bryan Lee. I heard him several times, including in the Old Absynthe Bar in New Orleans, where he really blew the doors off the place.

Again, thanks for an awesome evening and just for being there. We will be back often!

I would like to be able to spend a night at the Rynborn to see one of the many great bands that play there, cut loose, have a few drinks and not worry about having to drive the hour back home afterwards. I am sure there are not many hotels/motels in the Keene area and perhaps you could put up a link to the ones that do exist to make it easier for folks like myself to find a place nearby to spend the night.

Thanks!

Comments: Greetings. I've frequented the Rynborn since it's re-opening in Keene. I was there for dinner last night. Things are looking up with the lay out. The dance floor is re-arranged finally, pool tables etc. Acoustics? I've also noticed that the music calender now includes some local cover bands. I suspect it's about diversity or DIE trying in Keene. I've heard all the local many regional bands. "The Nines" "Tom Foolery" etc. The best cover band in the area, maybe in the North East is "Love Bomb". Far and away better than any you've got on your docket, that would be inclusive of your Blues acts too. Love Bomb has a large dedicated following because they are that good. If you hire Love Bomb, the people will come, the alcohol will flow. You have a competitor just across Main Street that is about to re-open with a large new dance floor and stage, a new menu, additional pool tables, and a second much larger bar. They have already hired some good bands for regular appearance!
s. They intend to get Love Bomb too. You should too. Email for Love Bomb/Robert Holmes > LoveBomb@adelphia.net Good Luck.

Reply from Doug:

Dear Jon,

Thanks for your input and patronage. I have heard good things regarding Love Bomb and will try to hire them in the future.

As far as Love Bomb being better than any band on the docket, that is quite a strong statement. Thinking that they are a superior cover band could be true, I don't know, having not heard them.

But to include the entire list of musicians that have come and graced the Rynborn stage? They would have to be exactly what everyone wants and they would have to be flawless. Again, I've heard nothing but good things about Love Bomb. But I'm not sure that even they would want to approach the pedestal that you have created.

We love the club and visit at least 3 times a month.

In the first weeks of the Rynborn opening in Keene, we were a little put off when after dining, drinking and spending lots of $$, we were asked to share our table with others who arrived later. Comments: Hi all --
I've been reading the guest book -- A lot of great entres.
I've been to many different opening mics over the years and have enjoyed them.
I really don't see a problem with a band that wants to get up and play 3 or 4 songs in order to try to get a gig and get some stage experience. After all, a new band with little or no gigs is really not a professional band.
I started playing piano and age 6, accordion at age 10, and have been into Blues for about 15 years now. I know how hard it is to get gigs but I keep trying. Most of the players I have known over the years have stopped playing music, or at least have stopped playing Blues.
Am 39 now and am going to keep playing the Blues as long as I can.
Good luck to all the musicians and thank you everyone for supporting the Blues.
Glen

I ran the award winning blues jam night at the rynborn for 10 long years.the way I look at it jam night is for people to have fun playing music and for bandleaders to find new talent. Its not for bands. In the past doug has used the night to check out new bands if they call ahead.we try to make it fun for everyone.having rehearsed bands get up for amateur night is not the right thing to do.thanks,Otis"Big Blues"Doncaster PS. Question on open mikes...The last couple of times I went to Antrim, it was difficult to understand how one gets on stage. I think Otis was the guy's name, he seemed to have things reserved ahead of time.
How do I get my band, "Phat Kat", up for a set?

Thanks
Keep up the great work

Terry,

There will be a sign up sheet in Keene.

Thanks for your input,

Comments: I moved to NH in 1986 - discovered the Rynborn a couple of years later. Since then it has been a haven for me. A place where I am never disappointed - where the music kicks ass, the food is excellent and the atmosphere is REAL. The club has character and personality - two things that are almost impossible to find today. Doug Aborn created magic, and every blues lover owes him a debt. The Rynborn staff works REALLY hard and yet they are always fun to be around. And the bands are exceptional and accessible. I was there to say goodbye to Antrim last night, and I will be there to say hello to Keene on the 16th. I know the new location will continue to feed my soul. Because it's about the people - Doug, the staff, the bands. Thank you for giving me something real I can grab on to.
